SEASON OVERVIEW:
Once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub, Ally McBeal, House) placed himself on the record for using unconventional means to elucidate even the most complicated cases. However, life hit him hard. After the tragic murder of his wife, Trudy (Stellina Rusich, The Outer Limits, Cold Squad, and Melora Hardin, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Office), Monk shut himself into his shell developing an extreme case of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Thus and so, one of the most brilliant detectives in San Francisco lost his badge and became a recluse… For three and a half years, he lived in a fool’s paradise struggling with even the simplest everyday tasks.
Despite his myriad quirky habits, Monk has some supportive friends. With the help of Dr. Charles Kroger (Stanley Kamel, Six Feet Under, The Guardian), an extremely gifted therapist, he made great strides in keeping control of his condition. Monk’s first personal assistant, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram, Felicity, Ghost Whisperer), helped him break out of his shell and feel alive again. Step by step, he went into his routine and got back to doing what he does best: solving crimes… An excessively dedicated employee, Sharona also became Monk’s right-hand woman assisting him with all kinds of things that his OCD and phobias prevent him from doing. Our Sherlock Holmes’ world fell apart when she decided to move back to New Jersey with her son, Benjy, and re-marry her ex-husband, Trevor Howe. Fortunately, Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The Division) knocked him into shape again. In her, Monk found more than just a feisty assistant. She is a loyal friend, a savvy businesswoman and a cunning blade able to trick other people into doing things that help her boss with a case. She and her teenage daughter, Julie, became a surrogate family for Monk.
The head of the Homicide Division of the San Francisco Police Department, Captain Leland Francis Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine, Third Watch, Hell on Wheels) shares a good friendship with his former partner and subaltern. Although he is a highly decorated detective, he knows he will never measure up to the illustrious Monk. Captain Stottlemeyer does his best to help his old partner, but is occasionally annoyed and baffled by his behavior. In spite of all that, he and Monk pull well together on cases that have San Francisco’s finest stumped. Often portrayed as unintelligent, Lieutenant Randall Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS) uses to strike his workfellows speechless with his wacky theories and techniques. However, he remains an important member of the team.
In the course of time, Monk gathered no less than 312 fears. Still, he has no problem cracking a case, as long as it doesn’t involve risk, heights, germs or clutter. Other than solving his wife’s murder, Monk craves for gaining back his position on the San Francisco police force.
