SEASON OVERVIEW:
Loosely based on the 2003 film of the same name with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson, Anger Management follows Charlie Goodson (Charlie Sheen, The Big Bang Theory, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), a former pro baseball player whose temperament issues sabotaged his own career.
In a tantrum, he tried to break a bat over his leg and instead cracked his knee. With his dreams and plans shattered in an instant, Charlie decided to go to college to become a therapist specializing in, you guessed it, anger management. Now, as a psychologist, he is able to dissect the messed up things he has done. Apparently, the list is not short at all. Like Charlie in Two and a Half Men, this guy is the classic likable rogue. As a matter of course, a few of his trespasses mirror things of which Sheen himself has been accused.
Charlie’s profession also taught him how to juggle his time between his two bizarre families. One includes his 15-year-old daughter, Sam (Daniela Bobadilla, Supernatural, Awake), a brilliant girl with OCD, and his ex-wife, Jennifer (Shawnee Smith, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Law & Order: Los Angeles), a smart and sarcastic woman with whom he is on surprisingly good terms.
The second family comprises his therapy group. Meet Lacey (Noreen De Wulf, Numb3rs, Chuck), a rich girl who shot her boyfriend when she caught him cheating, Patrick (Michael Arden, Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Wife), a passive-aggressive person with relationship problems, Nolan (Derek Richardson, House, Psych), a man who loves making other people angry, and Ed (Barry Corbin, One Tree Hill, Modern Family), a Vietnam veteran who is mad at the world because, now that he has retired, he feels useless!
Charlie adores his daughter, respects his ex-wife and constantly watches over them. Meanwhile, he goes through life in a happy-go-lucky fashion, having no-strings-attached sex with fellow therapist Kate Wales (Selma Blair, Friends, Web Therapy), who happens to be his best friend (and then his own therapist).
To cut a long story short, Charlie Goodson changed his life in a way that works for him, including offering pro bono anger management sessions for the convicts at the local prison. Of all the reasons to check out FX’s new sitcom, the best one is the simplest. It’s screamingly funny. Enjoy the show!
