SEASON OVERVIEW:
Having a look of a spicy mélange between The Sopranos and Mad Men, Starz’s period drama is strewn with riveting plot twists and highly elaborated character, creating its own bizarre, exotic world and defining itself as something unique. Isaac “Ike” Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy), the owner of Miami’s most glamorous hotel, the Miramar Playa, rides high. Still, to finance his dream, he made a pact with the devil, namely Ben “The Butcher” Diamond (Danny Huston, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, John Adams), the king of Miami’s underworld. Seeing there is no way he can cohabit with a mobster, Ike embarks on a life and death mission to win back the Miramar Playa. In the meantime, Ben casts about to install a casino in the prestigious location. Ike’s dangerous plan to defeat Ben leads him to his adversary’s boss in the Chicago Outfit.
Ike’s entire life is a façade. Nothing at the Miramar Playa is what it seems. By day, it’s a land flowing with milk and honey. By night, wildness blossoms on the rhythms of the legendary musicians and singers. Meanwhile, Ike’ second wife, Vera (Olga Kurylenko, Secrets, Tyranny), a former Havana nightclub dancer under the name “Vera Cruz”, thinks he’s an honorable man, devoted to giving their daughter an extraordinary bat mitzvah party and making the family proud. Unaware of Ike’s mob connections are also his three children, Steven “Stevie” Evans (Steven Strait, The Covenant, City Island), his rebellious older son and the manager of the Miramar’s Atlantis Lounge, Daniel “Danny” Evans (Christian Cooke, Robin Hood, Doctor Who), his scrupulous younger son and a law school student, and Lauren Evans (Taylor Blackwell, One Tree Hill, Army Wives), the couple’s 13-year-old daughter. Actually, almost everyone sees him as an upstanding citizen.
Fidel Castro, shriveled Holocaust survivors with tattooed numbers on their arms, the Kennedys and spies are just some of the people who share the beach with kittenish young tanned beauties.
