SEASON OVERVIEW:

Written by Michael Hirst, the genius who created, among others, The Borgias and The Tudors, Vikings has its roots in the tales of the Norsemen explorers and traders of early medieval Scandinavia. The series charts the passages of the legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lodbrok (Travis Fimmel). The young farmer and warrior yearns to sail across oceans in search of new civilizations, against the will of the local lord, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), who only wants his men to stick to the same old routes. With the help of his friend, the gifted craftsman Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), he builds a new generation of fast long ships. For his first epic, illegal voyage, Ragnar and his plunderers decide to travel to West, where this group of Vikings didn’t venture before. He is supported by his wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), also known as “Shield Maiden”, and his brother, Rollo (Clive Standen).

They arrive in England, whereupon Ragnar, his brother, Rollo, and his warriors storm into a monastery and kill most of the monks. Still, Ragnar takes a shine to a young Anglo-Saxon cleric, Athelstan (George Blagden), whom he turns into his slave. The successful raid kindles the enmity of King Aelle (Ivan Kaye) and triggers a series of increasingly violent confrontations with Earl Haraldson. In the train of events, Ragnar pledges fealty to King Horik (Donal Logue) and represents him in negotiations about a land dispute with Earl Borg from Götaland (Thorbjørn Harr). Eventually, he loses his heart to Princess Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland).
