SEASON OVERVIEW:
The legend of King Arthur and Merlin the Seer will never die. Over the last decades, many creators, directors and writers had a dash at reworking the story in order to suit the modern sensibilities. BBC’s fantasy drama follows the dangerous journey of the young Merlin (Colin Morgan, The Catherine Tate Show, Doctor Who) as he polishes his powers under the guidance of the royal physician, an elderly and eccentric mentor named Gaius (Richard Wilson, One Foot in the Grave, Demons). The apprentice arrives in Camelot on the day King Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head, NYPD Blue, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) orders the execution of a man accused of witchcraft, which the monarch had outlawed 20 years earlier. Thereby hangs a tale… He also had all the dragons slain, save one, the Great Dragon (the voice of John Hurt, Watership Down, The Alan Clark Diaries), which lays imprisoned in the caves beneath the castle’s dungeons.
Merlin quickly crosses paths with Arthur (Bradley James, Lewis, Dis/Connected), a charming but arrogant prince who made a habit of taunting younger and weaker boys. Their relationship has a rough start when Merlin stands up to Arthur and nails his colors to the mast even after learning that the bully happens to be the heir to the throne. Then and there, he also meets Guinevere (Angel Coulby, Vincent, Hustle), a blacksmith’s daughter and a bit of a tomboy. Strong willed, beautiful and noble, Gwen is the lady’s maid of Morgana (Katie McGrath, The Tudors, The Roaring Twenties), the king’s loyal and somewhat lofty ward who possesses special abilities. Despite her father’s humble social rank, Guinevere attends royal banquets and tournaments. As the series continues, they get to know each other a little better and become good friends.
Naturally, at first, the apprentice has magical gifts that he doesn’t fully understand or control. Fascinated by his protégé’s powers, Gaius does his utmost to help him keep the kingdom safe. He confides a book of sorcery to Merlin, warning him not to be caught using magic. The beardless warlock and his friends must defeat supernatural creatures through gimmick and cunning, all while keeping Merlin’s own sorcery a well guarded secret. Although he must sweep his calling under the carpet, the young wizard has no qualms about mocking the heir to the throne.
Among the villains they face rank Anhora (Frank Finlay, Life Begins, Prime Suspect), the guardian of the unicorns, the Black Knight (Rick English, The Fixer, Primeval), the spirit of Tristan de Bois, Edwin (Julian Rhind-Tutt, Green Wing, Agatha Christie’s Marple), a sorcerer who wears the guise of a physician, Kanan (Alexander Siddig, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 24), the leader of a group of bandits, Knight Valiant (Will Mellor, Hollyoaks, Casualty), a great warrior from the Western Isles, Mary Collins (Eve Myles, Torchwood, Little Dorrit), an old sorceress who is out for revenge after Uther executed her son, Mordred (Asa Butterfield, Ashes to Ashes, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas), a young druid, and many others at least as dangerous as those aforementioned…
