SEASON OVERVIEW:
Fathered by Robert Doherty (Medium, Ringer), Elementary is more than a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s character, Sherlock Holmes. The procedural field grows rich with a show which gets itself noticed through brightness and poignancy. After coming out at the little end of the horn in England, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller, Eli Stone, Dexter) moves to Manhattan. Since he’s fresh out of rehab, his wealthy father forces him to live with a “sober companion”, Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu, Futurama, Ugly Betty). Once a successful surgeon, she sees her current job as an opportunity to redeem herself after a tragic mistake in her past caused the death of a patient. Unlike her previous clients, the restless Sherlock isn’t quite manageable. Their collaboration gets off to a bad start. He is convinced that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and informs her that he’ll follow his own post-rehab regimen.
Sherlock wants a fresh start and he gets it, thanks to Tobias Gregson (Aidan Quinn, White Collar, Weeds), a New York police captain he worked with in London. In a blowing of a match, the mischievous consulting detective gets back into harness and Dr. Joan Watson has no choice left than to accompany her irascible new client on his jobs. With the lapse of time, Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, as Watson comes to love playing investigator. When her contract expires, she tells a white lie to stand by him. After a while, Holmes reveals he knows the truth and offers her a position as an apprentice. Watson accepts and starts training with Holmes to become a detective. What next? That remains to be seen…
