SEASON OVERVIEW:
Downton Abbey, a heavenly mansion in a great and splendid park, looks like a place flowing with milk and honey. Still, things aren’t always as they seem… The aristocratic Crawley family and the servants who work for them take the bitter with the sweet. Their day to day existence is islanded with ambition, desire, romance, disillusions and tragedies. It’s 1912, and Robert (Hugh Bonneville, Agatha Christie’s Poirot), Earl of Grantham, his American heiress wife, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern, Law and Order: Special Victim’s Unit), Countess of Grantham, and their three graceful daughters, along with Robert’s mother, Violet (Maggie Smith, David Copperfield), Dowager Countess of Grantham, lead a happy and quiet life. In order to keep all the money in the family, the pair arranges for their beautiful, eldest daughter, Mary (Michelle Dockery, American Dad!), to cast her lot with her cousin, son of the current heir apparent. However, the sinking of the Titanic hallmarks everything… and everyone. Both Lord Grantham’s heir, James Crawley, and his son Patrick, who was supposed to espouse Mary, perish. Therefore, the family is forced to welcome its heir presumptive, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens, Sense and Sensibility), a modern, young man who has the temerity to work for a living and is proud to be a member of the middle class.
As the series progresses, the old way of life begins to disappear. The Great War breaks out, lives and loves are lost, class and privilege dissolve. Matthew Crawley and the footmen Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier, Shameless) and William Mason (Thomas Howes, Murdoch Mysteries) throw away the scabbard. In full uniform, Earl of Grantham is angry and shamed to find out that, instead of being sent to the front, he must remain at home and keep the locals’ spirits from flagging. In the meantime, Lady Sybil Crawley (Jessica Brown Findlay, Misfits), the youngest daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham, defies her aristocratic position and joins the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Will life ever be the same at Downton Abbey? It remains to be seen…
