SEASON OVERVIEW:
“Nobody has everything they want. If you have everything, you want something else. Something more extreme. Something more specific. Something perfect.” Echo (Eliza Dushku, Ugly Betty, White Collar), the heroine of Joss Whedon‘ science fiction drama, has an endlessly challenging job. She was employed by a shadowy organization that runs numerous underground establishments, known as Dollhouses, where she and other individuals, referred to as Actives or Dolls, are imprinted with temporary personalities and skills to do various hush-hush jobs for wealthy clients. These “engagements” range from romantic interludes to deadly capers. Thus and so, on one assignment, she might play a hostage negotiator, on another, a midwife or a woman in love. Actives such as Echo voluntarily surrendered their minds and bodies to the organization for five-year stints. Meanwhile, their original personalities are saved on hard drives. However, not all is perfect at the Dollhouse. Although the Actives are childlike and personality-free between missions, slowly but surely, Echo begins to recover her memories.
As for the rest of the people in Echo’s world, they’re enigmatic and quite serious. Director of the Los Angeles Dollhouse, Adelle DeWitt (Olivia Williams, Friends, Spaced) does her job with an efficiency that is both ruthless and protective. Bitter-tongued, ego-driven and seemingly amoral, Topher Brink (Fran Kranz, Private Practice, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is the scientist who crafts the various personalities of the Actives for their missions. A former cop with a mysterious past, Boyd Langton (Harry Lennix, ER, House) plays the role of Echo’s handler. A well-trained FBI field agent, Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett, Smallville, Castle) is determined to solve and de-myth the urban legend of the Dollhouse. Victor (Enver Gjokaj, Community, Person of Interest) and Sierra (Dichen Lachman, NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-0), are two Actives who are inexplicably attracted to each other despite numerous attempts to wipe away their memories.
