SEASON OVERVIEW:
At first blush, USA’s dramedy series spins an unoriginal yarn. Although the story of the odd couple who works tooth and nail to throw white-collar criminals behind bars has been told before, the show is more than enjoyable. The dry humor, the sizzling chemistry between the protagonists, Tim DeKay (Friends, Scrubs) as Special Agent in Charge Peter Burke and Matt Bomer (Chuck, Glee) as the charming, young con artist Neal Caffrey, and the agile tone which toggles from comedy to intrigue and back make White Collar a hit.
One of the world’s greatest confidence man, Neal Caffrey goes over the hill. He breaks of the prison he’s been locked away in for three years and nine months to find his girlfriend Kate Moreau (Alexandra Daddario, Damages, Nurse Jackie). Before long, he is caught by the man who put him there in the first place, Agent Peter Burke. However, Neal strikes a bargain… In exchange for his freedom, he will help the FBI catch the most slippery white-collar criminals in the country. Caffrey likes the proposal but not necessarily the terms… like wearing an ankle monitor and living in a fleabag hotel in New York because it’s a red one for the Feds. Still, he finagles his way from the shabby motel room to the guest bedroom of June Ellington (Diahann Carroll, Dynasty, Grey’s Anatomy), a wealthy, eccentric widow. Strange to say, as he struggles to stay on the right side of the law, Neal Caffrey ends up hurting those closest to him.
A hard-working, honest federal agent, Peter Burke has spent years studying Neal Caffrey’s moves, looking for flaws and crafting a plan to catch him on the hop. The one who has always stood by him is his wife Elizabeth Burke (Tiffani Thiessen, Just Shoot Me!, What About Brian). She understands her husband’s work ethic and reflects it in her own work as an event planner. Previously Peter’s probationary agent, Diana Berrigan (Marsha Thomason, Las Vegas, Lost) assists the unlikely duo in their first case together. She is one of the few people in the bureau whom Peter trusts implicitly. A resourceful and dedicated agent, Clinton Jones (Sharif Atkins, ER, The Good Wife) is Peter’s right-hand man. He also has a law degree from no less than Harvard University. Sara Ellis (Hilarie Burton, Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill) is an insurance company investigator who often rubs elbows with the team. In the past, she testified against Neal when he was accused of stealing a Raphael painting. Last but not least, Mozzie (Willie Garson, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Medium) is Neal’s most trusted friend and co-conspirator. Possessing an eidetic memory and deep ties to the criminal underworld, he appears to be a jack of all trades.
