SEASON OVERVIEW:
Like The Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Breaking Bad, Showtime’s Ray Donovan is an action packed piece of art. Ann Biderman, the creator and executive producer of the critically acclaimed police procedural drama, Southland, spread herself and shaped one of the most complex characters to keep viewers on the edge of their seats in front of the TV in a decade. A man of many faces, Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Independent Lens) earns his living as a “problem fixer” for the Hollywood elite. Although he got out of the ruck, this sophisticated player never forgot his humble roots. Ray is married to Abby (Paula Malcomson, Criminal Minds, Lie to Me), a woman who desperately wants to get out of the Valley and have the run of the neighborhoods, parties, and schools of the rich and famous. They have two children, Bridget (Kerris Dorsey, Monk) and Conor (Devon Bagby, CSI: NY), who know very little about their father’s family.
A despicable law breaker, Mickey Donovan (Jon Voight, Pope John Paul II, 24), Ray’s old man, is unexpectedly released from prison. After spending 20 years behind bars, he is more than eager to reunite with his family and settle some old (but hardly forgotten) scores. Into the mix are also Ray’s brothers, Terry (Eddie Marsan, Merlin, Law & Order: UK), a former boxer who developed Parkinson’s disease from too many blows to the head, Bunchy (Dash Mihok, Hawaii Five-0, Grey’s Anatomy), a recovering drug addict and alcoholic, and Daryll (Pooch Hall, The Game, Suits), their newly discovered sibling, Mickey’s illegitimate son from an affair. While the other Donovans seem willing to give the patriarch another chance, Ray has no truck with him. He decided to keep his distance from the aforementioned troubling and manipulative thug.
Ray’s team comprises Avi (Steven Bauer, Burn Notice, American Dad!), an Israeli tough man, who handles surveillance and clean up, Ezra (Elliott Gould, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Friends), a nutty old friend and a frequent collaborator and client, and a no-nonsens and sexy lesbian, who is an asset to Ray both in and out of the office, Lena (Katherine Moennig, The L Word, Dexter).
