SEASON OVERVIEW:
Savoring of a modern version of Boardwalk Empire, Starz’s Boss is a gritty and intransigent look at the dark side of American politics. The show revolves around Tom Kane (Kelsey Grammer, The Simpsons, Medium), a career politician who has been up to all manner of tricks in his life. As the Mayor of Chicago, he knows every move in the game and plays it well. Still, there is always a price to pay for success… and that price is high. Tom Kane’s relationship with his wife, Meredith (Connie Nielsen, The Devil’s Advocate, Gladiator) is nothing more than a political marriage. No wonder that their estranged daughter, Emma (Hannah Ware, Cop Out, Shame) bears her parents a grudge.
As if things weren’t bad enough, Tom Kane’s reign of power is about to crumble. He was recently diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies, a degenerative neurological disorder. In order to remain at the top of the tree, he conceals the disease from everyone around him except Dr. Ella Harris (Karen Aldridge, Sandcastles, The Dilemma). However, his closest advisors, Kitty O’Neill (Kathleen Robertson, Beverly Hills, 90210, The Business) and Ezra Stone (Martin Donovan, Weeds, Ghost Whisperer), begin to suspect there is a screw loose somewhere, but don’t dare to ask any questions, while State Treasurer Ben Zajac (Jeff Hephner, House, CSI: NY) is too busy waging his campaign to become the next Governor of Illinois to notice something is wrong with the Mayor.
Among the characters which gravitate around Tom Kane rank Ian Todd (Jonathan Groff, Glee, The Good Wife), a political upstart, who tries to insinuate himself into the Mayor’s favour, Mona Fredricks (Sanaa Lathan, Nip/Tuck, The Cleveland Show), Tom Kane’s new strong-willed Chief of Staff, Sam Miller (Troy Garity, Hawaii Five-0, The Playboy Club), a journalist working for The Sentinel, who is determined to expose the Mayor’s nefarious political maneuvering, Maggie Zajac (Nicole Forester, Monk, Two and a Half Men), Ben Zajac’s wife, Darius Morrison (Rotimi Akinosho, Cooper and Stone), a drug dealer with whom Emma is romantically involved, and Trey Rogers (Tip “T.I.” Harris, Entourage), a former gang member with designs on a career in Chicago’s City Hall.
