SEASON OVERVIEW:
When brilliant minds collide, amazing things can happen. Shaped by Terence Winter (Diagnosis Murder, The Sopranos) and Martin Scorsese (The Aviator, The Departed), two iconic figures of the movie world, Boardwalk Empire is a complex and entertaining saga which reflects the American society of the 1920s and 1930s, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States.
The Great War comes to an end, Wall Street goes like a bomb and everything is up for sale. Politicians are hand and glove with gangsters and together collude to make a killing, even literally if it comes to the pinch, from the trade with illicit alcohol… Shop clerks, showgirls, Feds and fixers, one and all, also play an important part during the Prohibition period. Lain on the southern New Jersey shore, Atlantic City is paradise, a place where rules don’t apply. The undisputed treasurer of this land known as The World’s Playground is Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi, The Simpsons, 30 Rock), a political fixer and backroom dealer who rules the roost on both sides of the law.
Although Nucky contends with a rising generation of gangsters like Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Ugly Betty), the powerful New York kingpin of the Jewish mafia, and Charles “Lucky” Luciano (Vincent Piazza, Law & Order, Rescue Me), a New York yegg of the Sicilian mafia, he gives as good as he gets. When it comes to dividing the spoils, men like him abide by the old rules. However, Al Capone (Stephen Graham, This is England, The Street) and even Nucky’s own protege, James “Jimmy” Darmody (Michael Pitt, Dawson’s Creek, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), don’t make much of the gentlemen’s agreements. The two returned from World War I with a far more rough and materialistic perspective.
Their rackets attract the attention of Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Revolutionary Road), a fanatical Federal Prohibition agent who doesn’t seem able to set the Thames on fire. Howbeit, appearances are deceptive. Among the characters who spice things up in The World’s Playground rank Albert “Chalky” White (Michael Kenneth Williams, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Lie to Me), the leader of the city’s African American community, Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, Life on Mars), Jimmy’s mother and an opportunistic ex-showgirl, Richard Harrow (Jack Huston, Outlander, Eastwick), a former Army marksman, Elias “Eli” Thompson (Shea Whigham, Pride and Glory, Fast & Furious), Nucky’s resentful younger brother, Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald, Gosford Park, No Country for Old Men), a young Irish widow and mother who becomes Nucky’s mistress and others who are waiting to be discovered.
If you have a thing for richly detailed historical dramas with heroes whose stories are deeply compelling, Boardwalk Empire is the perfect choice. Enjoy!
